SCSD Boys Volleyball Earns Scholar Athlete Team Honors

Students on the Syracuse City School District’s combined Boys Volleyball team have earned a New York State Scholar Athlete Team Award for their excellent academic work.  This is the first time in SCSD program history that the team has been given this honor.

Members of the team come from the SCSD’s high schools. The team is coached by Beth Rourke. Bob Piraino is the junior varsity coach. 

Cheerleader Recognized for Academic Achievement

Lincoln Middle School student Lydia Richard has been chosen as a 2011-2012 Pop Warner All-American Scholar.

Lydia, a 7th grader, was recognized for her outstanding academic achievement. She ranks among the top two percent of the approximately 400,000 children nationwide who participate in the Pop Warner Little Scholars’ spirit and football programs.

She is a cheerleader for the Eastwood Bears.

Chiefs Players Pitch BASE Program

Students in elementary schools in the Syracuse City School district had the opportunity to spend some time learning about healthy eating, the importance of exercise and being a good teammate when members of the Syracuse Chiefs and representatives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum came to visit classrooms.

SCSD Baseball Players Part of Charity Tournament

The Syracuse East and Syracuse West baseball teams joined players from 10 other teams at the 2012 Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease Baseball Classic at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Congratulations to Taniya Williams

Congratulations to Taniya Williams an 8th grader at Roberts School. Taniya competed at the Level 8 States Championships and won the Floor Exercise Competition!

Students Advocate for School Based Health Centers

Nearly 500 students, parents, health care practitioners, educators, and advocates gathered at the State Capital Building in Albany to raise awareness of the impact School Based Health Centers (SBHC’s) have on communities across New York State. Five students from the Syracuse City School District’s Westside Academy at Blodgett participated in the “Student Speakout” and listened to speeches from legislators and others who have been instrumental in bringing comprehensive health services to students on-site at schools.

Syracuse West and Syracuse East Softball Play in Dome

The Syracuse West (Corcoran and Fowler) and Syracuse East (Henninger, Nottingham and ITC) varsity girls softball teams participated in the first ever Syracuse University softball camp in the Carrier Dome. Little League, high school and college teams took part in this event. The Carrier Dome was transformed into two softball fields separated by a huge curtain in the middle. The East and West teams played a scrimmage format in the Dome for their game.

Nottingham Coach Named Class AA Coach of the Year

Nottingham High School’s boys basketball coach Greg Jones, was named the Class AA Coach of the Year in Section III. His award was presented during the Section III championship game and Mr. Jones was honored after a majority of this colleagues voted him this award. In addition to basketball Mr. Jones is an active member of the Nottingham High School community.

Harlem Globetrotters Visit Salem Hyde

Harlem Globetrotter Firefly Fisher arrived at Salem Hyde in his full warm-up gear to present their “C.H.E.E.R. For Character” program. This program is designed with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. The program focuses on Cooperation, Healthy mind & body, Effort, Enthusiasm, and Responsibility, using the acronym “C.H.E.E.R.”™.

Nottingham Nordic Skier is Section III Co-Champion

Nottingham junior Adam Luban has been named the 2012 Section III Nordic Skiing Co-Champion. Adam is the only skier from the Syracuse City School District and competes on a combined team with Old Forge. In addition to his individual accolades he helped propel the Old Forge/Nottingham team to the team title as well
