Students Honored for Outstanding Artwork

Winners of the School Bus Safety Poster Contest were honored at the District’s Transportation Center recently.

Jaime Alicea, deputy superintendent of the Syracuse City School District, handed out awards to several students whose drawings were on display at the Center. Participation in the contest also put the students’ schools in the running for a pizza party or a free field trip. The contest, sponsored by First Student, has been around for nine years.

Pat Bailey, the district’s director of transportation, said there were 208 entries this year.

“The students did not make it easy for the judges this year. We had so many good entries it was hard to choose,’’ Bailey said.

This year’s winners in the K-2 group were Amiah Corp, Salem Hyde, first place; Wesley Gerrish, Salem Hyde, second place; Kenna Murphy, Salem Hyde, third place; Johnay Moore, Dr. King, honorable mention.

In the 3-5th grade category winners were Lenin Tejada, Dr. King, first place; Ajiyah Coleman, McKinley, second place; Lixary Tejada, Dr. King, third place; Beatriz Alfonso, Seymour, honorable mention.

Students from Elmcrest took home prizes in the special division. They were: Brandon S., first place, Gus M., second place, Kristen L., third place, Vincent J., honorable mention.

In the 6-8th grade category the winners were Lauren Clere, Salem Hyde, first place; Sarah Babcock, Porter, second place; Dejahra Samuels, Clary, third place; Felenchia Thomas, Clary, honorable mention.
