The Syracuse Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. awarded scholarships to six students from the Syracuse City School District at its annual May Week Luncheon, May 5, 2012.

Race day is just around the corner and excited students from throughout the Syracuse City School are working hard to create a winning entry for the 8th annual Syracuse Soap Box Derby, set for June 9, 2012.

Students from Nottingham High School’s DECA program spent some time in Salt Lake City, Utah, this spring competing at Nationals.

Nastacia Marks, Serafina Parus, Emily Carlson, Jenyia Wilson, Natalie Mooney, Julianna Matthews and Oona O’Brien were joined by Thomas Azzolino, the club’s advisor and a business education teacher at Nottingham High School. While the students did not make it past the preliminary rounds of the competition they all were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet other DECA students from around the world, meet business leaders and get in some sightseeing.

Robert Woolery, a science teacher at Fowler High School and Carmela D’Agostino, a Pre-K teacher at Grant Middle School, were honored by the Syracuse Educational Foundation at their annual recognition breakfast. Also honored at the event were Tan Ngo, a teaching assistant at Fowler High School and Kara Shore, vice principal at Delaware Academy.
All were recognized for their commitment to education and their dedication to the students and families in the Syracuse City School District.

Lincoln Middle School student Lydia Richard has been chosen as a 2011-2012 Pop Warner All-American Scholar.

Lydia, a 7th grader, was recognized for her outstanding academic achievement. She ranks among the top two percent of the approximately 400,000 children nationwide who participate in the Pop Warner Little Scholars’ spirit and football programs.

She is a cheerleader for the Eastwood Bears.

Students in elementary schools in the Syracuse City School district had the opportunity to spend some time learning about healthy eating, the importance of exercise and being a good teammate when members of the Syracuse Chiefs and representatives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum came to visit classrooms.

Teachers interested in learning more about National Board Certification are encouraged to attend one of three informational sessions being offered at the Syracuse Teacher Center.

The sessions are being held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 29th, June 6th and June 12th at the center, 1153 W. Fayette St., Suite 200.
Attendees will receive information on what National Board Certification is, how to start working toward gaining it and what the requirements are to complete the program.

Winners of the School Bus Safety Poster Contest were honored at the District’s Transportation Center recently.

Jaime Alicea, deputy superintendent of the Syracuse City School District, handed out awards to several students whose drawings were on display at the Center. Participation in the contest also put the students’ schools in the running for a pizza party or a free field trip. The contest, sponsored by First Student, has been around for nine years.

Pat Bailey, the district’s director of transportation, said there were 208 entries this year.
