ED Smith Blacktop Takes Students Around the World
11/29/12

Parent volunteers, teachers, students, siblings and neighbors helped transform the blacktop in the playground at Ed Smith K-8 School into a work of art and an educational opportunity. They all worked together to create a world map, United States map, hopscotch lines, four square lines, picture frames, basketball free throw lines, coyote paw prints and a compass on the blacktop.

ITC Cheerleaders Win at Sectionals

The fall cheerleading squad at ITC took home the sectional title this year after winning in competition Nov. 10 at South Jefferson High School. Rick Spicer, Supervisor of Athletics at ITC, praised the students and their coach.  “The hard work and dedication to their sport has been evident over the last few years that I have been able to observe the athletes as well as their coach.’’

SCSD Students Win at NSBE Conference

Students from throughout the Syracuse City School District traveled to Parsippany, N.J. to compete during the 2012 NSBE regional conference. Syracuse students took part in three events (mathematics, robotics and science fair) and each event had two divisions, one for high school and one for middle school.

High School Students Compete in Oratorical Contest

The Social Studies and English Language Arts departments collaborated with the local chapter of the Dunbar American Legion Association (one of the first African-American chapters in the nation) to sponsor a district oratorical contest for our high school students.  The contest was at Nottingham High School and the students were competing for a chance to move on and try to win up to $18,000 in scholarships.

Fowler Seniors Learn About Careers

Students in the class of 2013 at Fowler High School attended a Career Day in early November that featured a discussion on dressing for success, a presentation on making college and career count and an opportunity to speak with a variety of people from the community about their chosen career.

SCSD Students’ Letters Win Tree Lighting Contest

Teamwork Key to Success for Meachem Teachers

Kevin Kuppinger, Kim Dominick, Agnes Sageer and Chris Constantino are innovators. They are fourth grade teachers at Meachem Elementary School whose outside the box thinking has resulted in academic success for their students.

The quartet teaches a group of children who split their time among classrooms. They spend 90 minutes with Dominick learning English Language Arts, 90 minutes with Kuppinger working on mathematics and 90 minutes with Constantino in science and social studies.  Special education teacher Sageer is involved with her students every step of the way.

Fowler Students Present “Silent Laughter’’

Students at Fowler High School will step back in time Nov. 16 and 17 as they take the stage to present “Silent Laughter,’’ a play that brings roaring ‘20s silent movie mayhem live to the stage.

The comedy, which is performed in black and white with no speaking characters, stars Billy, a dashing hero who overcomes jail, poverty, war and a dastardly villain to win the girl of his dreams.

Nottingham Students Star in ‘As You Like It’

Students from Nottingham High School will take the stage this weekend to perform in the Shakespeare classic “As You Like It.’’ The show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Len Fonte Center for the Performing Arts at Nottingham High School.

McKinley-Brighton Student Honored by Syracuse Fire Department

LaJada M. Grenton, 5, a kindergarten student at McKinley-Brighton School, was honored by the Syracuse Fire Department for “being an awesome and brave individual during a medical crisis.’’ The award comes after LaJada was able to get help for her older sister when the two were home alone.
