Five Syracuse City School District Teachers to Receive Real-Life Astronaut Training at U.S. Space & Rocket Center

Five Syracuse City School District teachers have been accepted to Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The teachers, Scott Daley and Robert Woolery from Frazer Middle School, Gary Brisson and Mary Newman from Hughes Magnet School, and Linda Trippany from Lincoln Middle School will engage in a week-long intensive educator training program focused on science and space exploration.

SCSD Students Headed to Ohio for Soap Box Derby Finals

Syracuse City School District students didn’t let the wet weather dampen their excitement for the 2013 Syracuse Soap Box Derby. Children ages 7 to 17 competed for the chance to represent Syracuse at the International Soap Box Derby World Championships, which will be July 27 in Akron, Ohio. Carrier Corporation, this year’s title sponsor, helped bring the event to students in the district.

Students Graduate from Adult Education Program

Nearly 125 students graduated from the Syracuse City School District’s Adult Education program this year. The graduates, many who have overcome a number of obstacles, worked hard and were rewarded with their GED.

Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras spoke at the graduation ceremony, which was held at Fowler High School. The superintendent reminded the students that their determination is what helped them to succeed.  

Three Nottingham students recognized at theater festival

Three Nottingham High School students earned awards last month during the 2013 Michael Harms Theater Festival.

The annual festival is an opportunity for local young people interested and involved in theater to learn more about the craft through performances, feedback and workshops. More than 150 students and adults from four Central New York High schools and two community theater groups participated in this year’s festival April 13 at Cayuga Community College in Auburn.

Dr. King Elementary Students tour Morrisville facilities

A group of 16 students from Dr. King Elementary School toured several educational facilities at Morrisville State College recently, learning about the school’s horticulture, dairy, aquaculture and agriculture programs.  

Morrisville professors and staff brought the students through the school’s Spader Greenhouse, the Arnold A. Fisher Dairy Complex, the Aquaculture Center and the Controlled Environmental Agriculture greenhouse. The students had the opportunity to learn about the diverse programs available at Morrisville.

Members of Syracuse high school book clubs attend Rochester festival

Nearly two dozen Syracuse high school students spent a recent Saturday at the annual Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival, meeting authors whose work they’ve read during the last year.

About 25 students from the city’s five high schools attended the festival 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18.

“It was a long day but the kids had a great time,” said Maureen Gridley, who runs the Fowler High School book club and is the library media specialist there.
